Professor Eaysmin Ara Lekha, PhD

Vice Chancellor, Uttara University

It has only been a decade since women first ascended to the Vice-Chancellorship (VC), the highest echelons of the education industry, in Bangladesh. Yet, the number of female VCs remains limited despite their continued efforts to break through the glass ceiling. Professor Eaysmin Ara Lekha, PhD, stands as one of these trailblazers, having assumed the role of Vice Chancellor at Uttara University since 2023. Dr. Lekha, renowned for her multifaceted contributions to education, linguistics, and academia, has left an indelible mark on the educational landscape of Bangladesh and beyond. She is a living example of transformative leadership and has devoted her career to changing the face of education. 

In 1992, Dr. Lekha obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Bangla Linguistics and Literature from the University of Dhaka. She then went on to earn her Master of Arts degree in 1995 from the same prestigious university. Her thirst for deeper understanding led her to pursue a Bachelor of Education from the National University of Bangladesh in 1998 and later a Master of Education in 2002, specializing in the pedagogical aspects of her field. Professor Lekha’s academic odyssey led her to pursue a doctoral degree in Linguistics at Jadavpur University, India, in 2010. Her doctoral research shed new light on the interconnectedness of language, education, and society, contributing valuable insights to the field. Undeterred in her pursuit of knowledge, she furthered her scholarly pursuits by undertaking postdoctoral studies at Ranchi University, India, in 2023. 

Dr. Lekha’s distinguished career spanning nearly three decades adds even more credence to her remarkable academic background. Beginning her journey in academia as a Lecturer at the Education and Development Institute, National University, Bangladesh, in 1996, she steadily climbed the ranks, serving as an Assistant Professor before transitioning to Queens University of Bangladesh in 2001. In 2003, Professor Lekha joined Uttara University, where she continued to make substantial contributions to the field of education. Starting her journey as an Associate Professor, she rapidly progressed to the esteemed position of Professor in just four years, consolidating her standing as a prominent figure in her domain. 

Her expertise and leadership qualities were further recognized when she assumed key administrative roles within the university, including Chairperson of the Department of Education and Dean of the School of Education and Physical Education. Professor Lekha’s administrative acumen and futurist leadership were instrumental in shaping the strategic direction of Uttara University. As Proctor, she played a pivotal role in maintaining discipline and upholding the institution’s academic integrity from 2007 to 2010. Dr. Lekha also served as an Executive Committee Member for Cultural Affairs at Uttara Club from 2007 to 2008. Subsequently, she served as Pro Vice Chancellor of Uttara University from 2012 to 2023, where she spearheaded initiatives to enhance the quality of education and foster innovation in teaching and learning. Her proactive role during the COVID-19 pandemic prevented the university from facing the catastrophic challenges encountered by many other universities in the country and throughout the world.  Taking timely action, she transitioned campus-based education to an online platform, thereby preventing thousands of students from dropping out and safeguarding numerous university staff from job loss. In 2023, Dr. Lekha’s stellar track record and exemplary leadership qualities led to her appointment as Vice Chancellor of Uttara University, a position she holds with distinction. In this capacity, she has been instrumental in driving institutional excellence and promoting academic excellence across all facets of university life.

In her teaching career, Dr. Lekha has covered a diverse range of courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels. From foundational subjects like Education and Educational Administration to specialized topics such as Curriculum Design and Material Development in ELT, she has imparted knowledge and insights that are instrumental in preparing students for professional roles in education. Her expertise also extends to areas like Law and Education, Psychological Tests and Measurement, and various aspects of literature, including Bengali Literature & Linguistics, World Literature, and Literary Research: Theory and Practice. She has assumed a significant role in nurturing the academic pursuits of doctoral candidates as a Supervisor for PhD theses at esteemed institutions such as Netaji Subhas Open University in Kolkata, India, Kalyani University in West Bengal, India, and the University of Gour Banga in Malda, India. Her supervision and mentorship have played a crucial role in shaping the research endeavors of aspiring scholars, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in their respective fields.

In addition to her teaching and supervisory roles, Professor Lekha has actively engaged in public examination expertise. As a Question Paper Moderator for the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC), she ensures the integrity and quality of examination materials. Moreover, her role as an External Expert and Member of the Viva Board for the PSC further demonstrates her commitment to maintaining high standards in public examinations. Additionally, she has served as an Examiner for B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) examinations at the National University, Bangladesh, both internally and externally, contributing her expertise to the evaluation process and ensuring fairness and accuracy in assessment.

Professor Lekha has also played significant role in higher education administration at the national level. As a member of the Regent Board at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science & Technology University, Gopalganj, from 2018 to 2023, she contributed her expertise to the governance and strategic planning of the university, further cementing her reputation as a leader in the field of education. In her capacity as a member of various committees such as the Teachers’ Appointment Committee, Officer and Staff Appointment Committee, and Disciplinary Committee, Professor Lekha has contributed her expertise to crucial decision-making processes, ensuring transparency and fairness in administrative affairs. Additionally, her involvement as a Member of the Syndicate and Academic Council underscores her dedication to shaping the strategic direction and policies of the university.

Dr. Lekha’s outstanding contributions and exemplary achievements have garnered international recognition, earning her prestigious awards and honors. In 2024, she was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the World Science Congress held in Kolkata, India. Prior to this, in 2023, she was honored with the Biswa Manab Siksha Chakra by the Jangipur Manab Siksha Research & Training Institute in India, recognizing her significant contributions to education and research. Her accolades also include the MTC Global Award received in Bangalore, India, in 2018 and the International Women’s Day Award presented by the Asian Human Rights Foundation in 2017, celebrating her dedication to promoting gender equality and women empowerment. In 2016, Professor Lekha was specially acknowledged for her exceptional contributions to education and research by Biswa Bharati, India. Furthermore, the Australian Academy of Business Leadership in Sydney, Australia, honored her outstanding leadership abilities in 2015 with the Distinguished Leadership Award. During her student years, she showcased her talent by winning awards in dance competitions and for singing and poem recitations in the Greater Faridpur district.

Dr. Lekha’s commitment to education and community development extends beyond the realms of academia, as evidenced by her ventures in educational entrepreneurship, social activities, and business management. As the convener of the Sexual Abuse and Harassment Protection Committee, she has played a pivotal role in ensuring the well-being and security of students and staff at Uttara University. Professor Lekha has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to promoting accountability, transparency, and equity within the academic community through her active engagement in committee services. Professor Lekha demonstrates her entrepreneurial competence and business acumen in various sectors. As the Executive Director of MdBadrul Iqbal, MBIL Ltd, based in Dhaka, and the Proprietor of Crystal Consortium and Director of Development Assistance & Trading Ltd, she is pivotal in steering the company towards success. 

Beyond her corporate engagements, Professor Lekha is actively involved in social initiatives, serving as a Trustee of the DAR Trust and an Advisor to Orient Trading and Builders, OTBL Ltd, both based in Dhaka. Her role as a Founding Member of the Education and Development Institute and Olympia Institute of Physical Education at National University, Dhaka, further demonstrates her commitment to education. Moreover, her contributions to establishing educational institutions like M.A Rouf Teacher’s Training College, Sabira Rouf College, Talent Campus School & College, and Berer Bari Hospital reflect her commitment to nurturing talent and promoting healthcare in underserved communities. She serves as a National Consumer Rights Protection member under the Ministry of Commerce and the National Committee on Member Registration for Bangladesh Scouts. Through her multifaceted engagements, Professor Lekha continues to make significant contributions to education, business, and social welfare, leaving a lasting impact on the communities she serves.

Dr. Lekha excels in research and writing. Her books are used as part of the curriculum nationally and internationally, especially in West Bengal, India. Professor Lekha’s knowledge and research is richly documented through her authored works. Professor Eaysmin Ara Lekha is truly a trailblazer and an embodiment of academic excellence, guidance, and dedication. 

Born on July 9, 1970, Dr. Eaysmin Ara Lekha proudly identifies as Bangladeshi and practices Islam. She is the daughter of the late M. A. Rouf and the late Sabira Rouf. Her husband, Dr. M. Azizur Rahman, Ph.D. in Economics from Vanderbilt University, USA, is the founder of Uttara University and numerous other business houses and institutions.  Dr. Lekha is carrying on Dr. Rahman’s legacy to the next generation with commitment and expertise.  She is the proud mother of Mr. Nabid Aziz and Mr. Abid Aziz.  She often quotes lines from Rabindranath Tagore’s poem “Pran” (“Life”): “মরিতে চাহিনা আমি সুন্দর ভুবনে, (I don’t want to die in this beautiful world)/ মানবের মাঝে আমি বাঁচিবারে চাই”(I want to live among human beings). These lines reflect her enthusiasm to continue her endeavors and her dedication to humanity to improve the world. She has traveled a path defined by her unflinching quest for leadership, education, and service.
